Favorable Playing Conditions
As your child advances in music study, regular practice becomes more important.
Regular and quality playing time can be promoted if parents would provide the student with the most favorable practicing conditions.
These include:
Regular time scheduled for playing the instrument.
Praise for work well done.
Regular maintenance and repairs. This is necessary
to keep the instrument in excellent playing condition.
Not using playing time as punishment,
Special Guidelines for Band Students
As soon as you enter the band room, find your seat,
put your books under your seat, take your instrument out of its' case, and place it to the left of your seat.
Warmup on your scales and Rubank method book.
When the director steps on the podium, there should
be silence so that instruction may begin.
Clarinets and saxophones must keep three playable reeds in their cases
at all times. Double reeds must keep two playable reeds in their cases at all times. Students are asked to purchase
a reed guard to protect reeds from breakage.
Brass players must have valve oil/slide oil available daily. Percussionist
must have an equiped stick bag in class daily.
It is imperative that all instrument cases and stick bags have a clearly
marked name tag at all times.

Concert Performance Grade
As we approach the holiday season and spring semester, concert performance will
become a part of the nine weeks grade. Participation in scheduled performances will count as a grade of 100 points.
At W. G. Sanders, our Concert Performance grade is divided into two areas. They
are (1) After-school rehearsal attendance (65%) and (2) Concert Band Performance (35%).
After- School Rehearsals -65%
All band students will be expected to attend after-school rehearsal. As long as
students maintain good practice habits, there will only be a few rehearsals before each performance. To calculate
the attendance grade, the number of rehearsals are divided into 65% which gives a per rehearsal percentage.
(Ex. 65% divided by five (5) rehearsals = 15%; therefore, each rehearsal is worth
15% percentage points.) With each absence, the percentage is deducted from the 65%.
Concert Band Performance 35%
Persons performing in the concert must perform each concert selection for the Band Director
or section leader. Ninety percent (90) proficiency must be accomplished on each selection before the student is allowed
to perform with the ensemble. Students can be evaluated as many times as necessary. Once the audition is completed and the
student performs the concert, the full 35% will be given.
Concert Performance Grading Formula:
attendance + performance = grade!!!
